Office of Disability Services: Meet Sarah Evans

I am a blind student who is completing a master's degree at Ohio State. Throughout my studies, I have utilized disability services many times. They provide services such as reading tests, transcribing and assistance with ordering books. Also, they are very understanding and considerate of needs that a student might have while getting used to the campus. They make every effort to make you feel comfortable in your classes and on campus.

Each quarter, you will receive a letter from Disability Services that lists the accommodations you have been approved for. Disability Services asks you to give your professors this letter. The letter helps you to start a conversation with your professor about your needs in class. Talking to your professor before classes start help you and the professor get to know each other a little, and helps the teacher to know how he or she can best help you learn in class.

Disability Services helps to advocate for you in school and works with both your and your professors to come up with strategies to help you learn best.

Disability Services is a great support system. They have had experience with several other students and can listen to your concerns and give you ideas about how to handle and manage tasks associated with your classes and any other experiences on campus.

You must come in to register with them, and while you're there, discuss any specific needs you may have. I am aware that they have served students who have a wide variety of needs. Disability awareness is very important to them and efforts are constantly made to educate the general population of students about the needs of people with disabilities and how they should be treated.

These services have been crucial to my education and have made my time at Ohio State a positive experience. I recommend that you register with Disability Services and get to know them. They will make an effort to know you and learn about specific needs you may have. I have been treated with the highest respect and dignity and I feel that you will be treated this way as well.
